Honduras
Honduras Public Health Program
During your brigade, you will mainly focus on creating your assigned community, a Community Health Action Plan. This is a written document that states plans for achieving public health improvements in the community.
The Community Health Action Plan acts as a comprehensive guide that assesses the main public health issues affecting a community as well as strategies for achieving improvements in these areas. Community Health Action Plans aim to empower community members so they can lead their own development projects by :
- Getting a direct assessment of their main issues in terms of healthcare services and WASH infrastructure accessibility.
- Taking a careful look at proposals for projects that could be implemented in their community at a feasible time frame.
- Instructing community members on leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Determining committees of individuals that will support each initiative ideally in all stages of a project.
- Establishing realistic timelines in which all involved parties can start working on projects.
- Working on project implementation.
- Following up on initiatives developed in the community to check if goals were achieved.
Another aspect to take into consideration is that you will follow the ESCASAL which is a methodology designed by UNICEF in an attempt for creating spaces for reflection so community members can identify issues affecting the healthcare and WASH areas of their community and take action by proposing ideas and smart solutions for these problems.
Please note you will be supported by both your Brigade Coordinator and Public Health Technician while working on your Community Action Plan!
